Yigal Adato: 00:22 Hey everyone, my name is Yigal Adato and this is the Pawn Leaders Podcast, a podcast that help you make more money, stress less and live an epic life all while working at the pawnshop. Hey pawn family, welcome back to another episode of the Pawn Leaders Podcast with me I have Joe Apfelbaum, who’s the CEO of Ajax Union a B2B Digital Marketing Agency based in Brooklyn, New York. Who is a business strategist and marketing expert and certified Google trainer. And Joe is the author of his new book, High Energy Secrets. And this guy has so much energy, you have no idea. High Energy Secrets how he lost 95 pounds and it has more energy than ever before when he’s not motivating entrepreneurs at events and on social media he chose Brooklyn with his wife and his five kids. Joe, welcome to the show.
Joe Apfelbaum: 00:59 So happy to be here. This is so exciting!
Yigal Adato: 01:03 Man I’ve known you for a while. You were on one of my other shows, small business, big leaders. And we talked about business there. But a couple of weeks ago you published your book High Energy Secrets and I saw a picture of you and you were 95 pounds heavier. You were my friend.
Joe Apfelbaum: 01:23 I was fat, I was fat, but I was cool.
Yigal Adato: 01:28 It doesn’t take away the coolest from being fat. But I brought you on the show obviously in this niche market of pawn because for years growing up, my father, pawn broker, my uncle, my grandfather, and the people around me just, there wasn’t a lot of health in the pawn industry, a lot of drinking, a lot of smoking, a lot of people being overweight, a lot of stress because you’re working day in and day out on the counter. I said, man, I gotta bring Joe on so he can enlighten us with how he lost 95 pounds, how he got so much energy. And you work so much. Like you know, you’re doing events and you’re working, you’re running a business, you’ve got a podcast, you’re doing coaching like you do so much and you’re just full of energy. And I think that would be such an amazing way to teach pawnbrokers of how to do that. So, let’s talk about High Energy Secrets, what made you write the book and what about it has you so excited with sharing today?
Joe Apfelbaum: 02:25 So, for me I effort for the longest time, for the longest, longest time, I wanted to figure out a way to lose weight. You know, I was a type of guy who wanted to lose weight quickly. You know, I’m not the type of person who wants to get lucky, right? I like coming up with a strategy, knowing what my strategy is and knowing that I didn’t just get lucky, but I liked doing things the smart way they say, [Foreign Language]. Don’t just use energy, but like use smart energy, use the right energy. So I went around asking people and saying, okay, listen, I’m 265 pounds. I know I need to lose weight because I’m like a size 42 pants within elastic belt. Right? I’m like, I got to that level. Whereas like every year I went from 34 to 36 to 38 and then I crossed the 40 and I was like, okay, I got to go to Costco now to get my elastic belts. And I got to this level where I’m like, all right, I had enough. Then I’m sitting on my couch one day when my kids we’re watching a video of me just doing stuff and you know, playing with the kids and rewatching the video on the couch and now all of a sudden I hear this heaving noise in the background that I asked my wife, Hey, what’s that noise? Is there a fan here or something? And she’s like, no, that’s you. That’s you breathing. That’s how you breathe. You actually breathe with a heaving noise because you’re so overweight. Holy Crud. I was like, you know what? That was the point where I’m like, I’m not gonna be able to run around my kids. I’m not be able to play with my kids. I’m going to get really, really sick. I got to take things to the next level now. So what do I do? How do I take things to the next level? So I started thinking to myself, okay, let me ask my wife for advice because she’s a foodie and she understands food and she took many diets. I said, what do I do? She’s like, you love food too much. Don’t ask me. I said, okay, great. So I went to my friends and I said, hey guys, let’s go out for dinner and let’s have a conversation. So he went to La Mare after a bunch of appetizers, a couple of drinks, two mains and desserts. I can tell you right then and there, these were the wrong people to ask them how to lose weight. So I double parked in Brooklyn, right? And I’m waiting for someone to move because in Brooklyn it’s very difficult for you to find parking in Brooklyn and believe it or not, it’s very, very difficult to find parking in Brooklyn. So I’m like waiting for a parking spot because I don’t want to walk an extra two or three blocks. Right. I was the type of person then I was like, I’m not going to walk. I have a car, we have two cars, you know, my business already took off. We were number 170 on the ink 5,000, one of the fastest growing digital marketing agencies in the United States and I was very happy from that perspective, but my health wasn’t in order. I lacked integrity in the way that I behave from a health standpoint. I didn’t value, I said, you know, I said things like salads, salads are for ladies for wimps. I eat fried chicken and burgers and French fries and egg rolls. That was like, that was my attitude, right? So I didn’t want to walk. I want to try to find a parking right outside the fast food restaurant. Anyway, finally I decided I’m going to go park the car because I was waiting for 20, 30 minutes outside of the house and nobody was moving. So I went three, four blocks away and as I’m walking back I’m waiting to cross eastern parkway and I look at my phone and I think to myself, you know what? Let me post on Facebook and see if any of these friends can actually help me lose weight. Because my friends can’t help me, my wife can’t help me, I can’t help myself. I’m pretty desperate. And so I wasn’t very authentic on Facebook back then. It wasn’t like me like I have now. I have thousands of followers on social media. Back then I had nobody liking or posting anything cause I would just do self promotion and I was very like insecure. So I posted and I just wrote, you know guys, I’m looking to lose weight. I don’t know what to do, at this point I’m pretty desperate. If you like this post, I will run one minute per like, let’s see if anyone even likes this. Right. And I turned my phone off and I went to sleep. The next morning I woke up, I turned my phone on, I had 10 likes. I was like, as a marketer, you know, with attention deficit disorder, I have a deficit of attention. So I try to do anything to make up for the attention. I was like, holy crap! I got all these likes! So I took a photo of myself, a video of myself running on Eastern Parkway, actually limping on Eastern Parkway. And I did it and the next day I got 20 people to like and the next day I got 30 people to like, cause I went rollerblading. I wasn’t really rollerblading as roller dragging and before you knew it, I had 70 people a day following me and saying, you’re inspiring me. We’re going for a walk. And I’ll go like, yes! I’m going to lose this weight! And I started drinking water instead of drinking six snapples a day. I used to drink six snaples a day. And before you knew it I started to have more awareness.
Yigal Adato: 07:08 6 Snapples a day that’s got like 30 grams of sugar per Snapple. Six that’s, the pawn brokers no grams of weight of gold. That’s a ton of sugar, man.
Joe Apfelbaum: 07:19 But I used to say, I love like my chubby fingers, I love like turning the cap and then it snaps and then I look under and I read the joke and I laughed to myself, the corny joke like I was a prime target for Snapple. I’m going to Costco and buy cases of peach and lemon and strawberry and mango Snapple. I loved it! I loved it! It was like my favorite drink and I loved it and it was freezing cold and down it with like three slices of pizza and a whole [Incomprehensible] and French fries and [Incomprehensible] balls dipped in [Incomprehensible]. You can tell I love food. I absolutely love and I still enjoy food, believe it or not I’ll still have a pizza. I’ll still have a burger. I just won’t do it every 15 minutes.
Yigal Adato: 08:00 Yeah, yeah like you used to right?
Joe Apfelbaum: 08:00 Yeah I used to do it all the time and I didn’t. You know, the thing was, now I’m looking back, I was like, I lacked awareness. Like there were certain things I did not even understand the strategy. Like when I started my business, I knew the basics, right? I knew that I wanted reoccurring revenue. I knew I needed a certain amount of accounts. I knew like I didn’t have the full awareness of the types of accounts that I needed that I have now. Like I didn’t understand business to the level that I understand that down to the finance, down to the operations, down to the culture, down to the proper digital marketing strategy to actually get results and build a sustainable business. But when it came to health, I knew nothing. All I know is that my mother used to pay me to eat and she said, the more you eat, the more I pay you. Eat a lot of chop meat and I love my mother, but her belief system was that you need a tremendous amount of bread and rice and pasta and like sugar in order for you to feel good and feel healthy, you need meat, you need protein. [Spanish Language], you know, so like that’s how I grew up. So that’s what I knew. I knew that if you felt bad, you got to go to kosher delight and eat a double burger delight as an appetizer with a box of white fried chicken and French fries and an egg roll, a corn on the cob, a large coke with no ice. And if you’re on a diet, you can have diet coke.
Yigal Adato: 09:27 Diet coke [Incomprehensible]
Joe Apfelbaum: 09:27 But you know, after I stopped eating at Kosha delight, they went out of business.
Yigal Adato: 09:32 You kept them going. So I was at one point 40 pounds overweight. My father was, you know, like 80 pounds overweight, got like a double stint and something changed in your mind and you had that moment where you were kind of like wheezing as you were talking and you said, I can’t play with my kids when they’re older. So then you kind of like went on this journey to find out how you’re going to lose weight and then you started walking. I mean I’ve been following you for a while. We’d been friends for awhile. You woke up every morning, you started just walking and then Facebook lighting as you were walking or taking a picture and there’s something changed in your mind. Like what clicked over for you say, man, I like doing this as opposed to the double cheeseburger, the coke, the fries and the corn on the cob.
Joe Apfelbaum: 10:20 As I started doing this, I started reading more books and started looking into personal development. Because before that I was more of a person who tried to learn tactics, right? I learned marketing, I learned sales, I learned like tactics, psychology. But I never really got into personal development. So I bought this book called the habit. I bought all these types of books, I start learning about why people make certain choices. Why did I automatically select Snapple instead of selecting water they’re both hydration, right? And I realized I had certain automatic tendency. So I started inspecting all my automatic tendencies and I started realizing there’s something called the conscious mind. And there’s the subconscious mind and the subconscious mind is what’s running most of our life. Believe it or not, your heart’s beating right now. I can’t feel my heart beating because I’m talking so loud, but because I have all this energy, but my heart is beating because I’m alive and the first sign of life, you know, when you’re having kids, I know you have kids. I have kids. The first sign of life is a heartbeat. Before you have a brain, you have a heartbeat. So your heart is very, very important and it beats constantly. And it’s what drives us, right? We have the subconscious and it’s what drives us and it makes a lot of decisions for us so that we don’t have to make decisions. But our conscious minds makes us make decisions. So the purpose of our conscious mind is to program our subconscious. So we’ve been given the conscious to reprogram the subconscious to get us to our goals. So whatever your goal is in life, whether it’s having more health, having more vitality, having more energy, having a better business, having a better relationship, the results you’re getting today are based on whatever habits you have. When I learned this, I was like, oh my God, I got to reprogram myself. So I started looking around, what am I going to reprogram? What do I need to reprogram? So I started realizing I needed to reprogram my attitude around running my attitude around what I eat, my attitude around what I drink, my attitude around breathing and so that’s basically what I wrote in this book, The High Energy Secrets book is kind of like number one is like understand that this concept of self control, if you’re going to rely on self control not to eat that Bagel, you’re done. You’re going to be on the Yoyo Diet. Like my mother is still is. And like I know most people that I know are gaining weight and losing weight and gaining weight and losing weight and gaining weight and they lose and then they gained more than they lost. It’s kind of like the market. If you’re going to allow emotions to drive your life, you’re never going to succeed. 90% of people who plan the market lose their money. 90% of people. So it’s the same thing. 90% of people will try to lose weight. They end up losing, but then they end up gaining more than they lost and then people just give up because it’s not going to work. But the fact is, I lost my weight and I kept it off because I figured something out that most people don’t know that it’s not about self control. It’s about rewiring your habits. And if you can go in there and rewire your habits, then you could, you can get your energy levels to a whole new level. And look right now as we speak, I am fasting for 48 hours. I am not drinking and I have a tremendous amount of energy because I learned about what gives you energy and let me give you a hint. It’s not food.
Yigal Adato: 13:37 So we’ll get back to that real quick. I do want to ask you a question. A lot of the pawnbrokers listening to the show right now are saying, Joe, I work at my store from 8 to 6:00 PM six days a week or seven days a week. I don’t have time to run. I don’t have time to eat healthy. I just got to kind of eat on the go. And before we kind of get into the tactics of the book, what do you say to those people?
Joe Apfelbaum: 13:59 If you’re sitting there and you say to yourself, I don’t have time to eat. I don’t have time to be healthy. I don’t have time to get up early in the morning, I’m too tired. All I’m going to say to you is the following. Every human being has the same 24 hours in the day. We all have time. The difference is what are your priorities? That’s number one and number two is what is your programming? So your priorities and your programming will determine your profitability, and when I talk about profitability from a health standpoint or from an energy standpoint, this is your bottom line. At the end of the day, how much energy do you have to do what matters? Because when you finish work and you come home, if you have children and you have no energy for them because you abused your body by having the wrong habits and you have no energy, you’re depleted energy and you cannot give them any attention and you’re basically just lashing out on them because you’re hungry. Then what’s the purpose of even working if you’re not even going to be emotionally available to your wife and your kids when you get home? So all I’m saying is your priorities, your priorities, and your programming. So once you realize that health is up on your priority, then you inspect your programming and you set yourself on an automatic program. We’re instead of grabbing the Danish, you grab the salad or you grab the bottle of water. Most of the time when we’re actually hungry, we’re actually thirsty. We’re not really hungry and I’ll get into that more. But if you say you don’t have time, it’s not that you don’t have time. Warren Buffet, by the way, also has 24 hours in his day.
Yigal Adato: 15:40 Love it. So let’s jump into water right away. I’m a big advocate of water. Tell me about the importance. I know that a ton of people are dehydrated. And tell me why water is so [Incomprehensible] got the smart water bottle out. Tell me why water is so important. I’ve got my boss glass bottle. Why is water so important and why does it give you so much energy?
Joe Apfelbaum: 16:04 People think that energy comes from food. They’re like, oh, no energy. Maybe you need to eat something. Your body is not made up of food. Your body is actually made up of 80% water, mostly water. Your brain is mostly water, and what happens is when you exhale, when you talk, when you breathe, what are you losing besides you’re losing your mind, you’re losing water, you’re losing hydration. How do I know this? Because if you come to New York on a cold winter day and you exhale, you’re going to see moisture coming out of your body. See that in photos like a dog and moisture leaves their body from their mouth. So every time you talk, you’re losing. Every time you breathe, you’re losing hydration. Now where do you get hydration from? You only get it from drinking and every process in your body uses water as its energy source for you to get filled up. Now, if you lose two liters a day, right? 2.5 liters a day and you’re not refilling it with 2.5 liters a day. You’re actually in a state of dehydration. And if you’re in a state of dehydration of 5% this is a study they did, a 5% drop in hydration is a 30% drop in energy. Why? Because your body goes into survival mode. And what happens is if your body doesn’t have enough fuel, it goes into economy mode and it says, I’m going to give this person less energy so it doesn’t use up all their hydration and we die. But if you’re a full on hydration and you drink half of your weight in ounces, because most of your weight is water anyway, and every 16 ounces is actually a pound. I don’t know if you guys know this, but 16 ounces is a pound. If you drink 16 ounces of water, you gain a pound. If you pitch out 16 ounces of water, you lose a pound. So by the way, you got to drink half your weight in ounces in order for you to be hydrated. And don’t wait until you’re thirsty because by the time you’re thirsty, you’re all ready dehydrated, you gotta drink proactively. If you’re not drinking proactively, you’re being dehydrated by breathing because your automatic body, automatically breathing. You’re automatically losing hydration as you breathe, as you talk, as you live. So you got to prioritize hydration by first understanding why it’s so important. Your energy comes from two things. Energy comes from oxygen and energy comes from water. Now, not food, not food. It doesn’t come from food. People think, oh, calories. Calories are potential energy. They’re not actually energy. They get stored as fat if you don’t use it. And then what happens is if you don’t have enough water, your body doesn’t want to get rid of the fat because it’ll help hydrate you. It’ll help hydrate you. So if you’re dehydrated, your body’s not going to get rid of the fat. And believe it or not, you lose fat through your urine. So I took a lot about this. I took a lot about this, that when I started drinking water, I automatically lost my first 10 to 20 pounds just by switching from Snapple to water. My Buddy’s like, ah, finally, now we can get rid of all these toxins. Now we can get rid of all the extra garbage that we were storing up because we weren’t getting enough water.
Yigal Adato: 19:22 Love it, man. I was in Little Rock, Arkansas a couple of months ago and they’ve got this thing called sweet tea, which is basically diabetes in a can and I couldn’t agree with you more. Yes, you’re going to start peeing a lot more, right? I do that as well. When I started drinking a lot water.
Joe Apfelbaum: 19:38 That’s a massive concern people, people always say, Joe, hang on a second. If I’m going to drink, half my weight an ounces I’m going to drink. If I weighed 200 pounds and I’m going to drink a hundred ounces of water, that’s a lot of water. That’s like three liters of water. I’m going to be in the bathroom all day as it is. I go to the bathroom. Too often entrepreneurs tell me and I say, hang on a second, how often do you go to the bathroom? They’re like, every minute. I was like, okay, a minute. Just pass. You didn’t go to the bathroom. You’re a liar. How often do you go to the bathroom? For sure. Every two hours for sure. That’s insane! I can’t work! I said, listen to me for a second. Calm down. First of all, I say, calm down. Okay. It’s only the bathroom. How big is your bladder? He’s like, are you checking my size? And I said, I’m talking about your bladder, not your dude, your bladder it’s like a little thing inside, it’s the inside. He’s like, oh, the bladder. I know. He’s like, it’s probably like a hundred ounces. I said, no! Your stomach is 32 ounces. Then your bladder is actually 16 ounces. That’s how big it is. It means if you drink 16 ounces of water, your bladder is full. When your bladder gets up to 10 ounces. If someone has a prostate issue, then when they drink four or five ounces, they have to go to the bathroom. But if they, if you’re a healthy individual, you can fill up your bladder up to 10 15 ounces and not have to go like crazy. Once you get the 16 you got to go that’s why I carry a canister in my car cause I know when I got to go, I got to go. It’s a part of body. It’s amazing. It’s on Amazon, available on Amazon. I got the green one. Anyway, the bottom line is-
Yigal Adato: 21:12 I’ll put the link in the show notes.
Joe Apfelbaum: 21:15 -it’s 16 ounces, so if you drink 16 ounces of water, this is 16 ounces right here. When I’m done with this, within two hours I have to go to the bathroom cause I’m going to eliminate. So yes, you if you drink enough water you will have to go to the bathroom every two hours and it’s perfectly normal.
Yigal Adato: 21:32 Love it man. Let’s move on to one of the chapters, which is five foods that make you fat. I think a lot of people are on these fat diets. What are the five foods that actually make you fat?
Joe Apfelbaum: 21:43 There are five foods that people don’t know this by the way, I used to think that fat makes you fat. I literally thought that fat makes me fat, and it’s the biggest lie ever. Fat doesn’t make you fat. When they stopped putting fat in food and instead they added gluten free and garbage and sugar instead of fat. That’s when the obesity levels, I have a chart here. That’s when the obesity level started going up in the United States. Fat actually does not produce fat. It’s actually flour. It’s actually sugar. It’s actually rice. It’s actually potatoes and it’s actually pasta. That is what causes fat to get created by a higher insulin level and your body. So your body is a fat creation machine. Your body’s actually a pharmacy. Your body can eliminate fat, create fat. It can do whatever it wants, right? You give it an ingredients, it’ll do something with it. Now, the crazy thing is if you don’t manage your hormones by the intake that you get, you’re going to just be producing fat. Your body can either produce fat or it can burn fat. It can do both at the same time. So even if you eat a little bit of rice cake, a little bit of a rice cake, what’s gonna end up happening is you’re going to be in fat producing mode. That means you cannot burn fat. It doesn’t burn fat. Somebody like Joe, I don’t need any carb besides rice cakes. I was like, you’re an idiot. You’re literally an idiot. He said, why? I was like, because you are in fact producing mode, not in fat burning mode. Get rid of the rice cakes, get rid of the sugar, get rid of the flour, get rid of the potatoes, and then people are going, what am I going to eat? I’m like, you have a heard a salad is like salads for ladies. I said, I used to say that.
Yigal Adato: 23:24 That’s awesome. So flour, sugar, rice, pasta, potatoes. You eliminated those free diet and it helps you get down 95 pounds. I just want to say something for the people listening, it’s not the fact that you just lost the weight. Like I know you, I’ve met you in person. You have this ridiculous amount of energy that I think is that people want, I want to be able to wake up early in the morning, go to work, do what I gotta do, come back home, play with my daughter, be with my wife, having energy to do something afterward as opposed to just knock out by 9:00 PM because I worked so hard. So listen up everybody. It’s not just about losing weight. So having energy and doing what you love in life and Joe just go ahead.
Joe Apfelbaum: 24:07 Yes, I agree. Listen, there’s electricity that flows through you. There’s emotional electricity that flows through you and in order for the electricity to be conducted, you cannot have so much fat in your body because five gallon bottle of water. Have you ever lifted a five gallon Poland spring bottle of water or have you buy you that probably call it something else because you’re in California. If you lift that bottle of water, how much you think it weighs? How much does a five gallon bottles of water weigh. How much do you think it weighs go?
Yigal Adato: 24:36 Like full?
Joe Apfelbaum: 24:38 Yeah, full.
Yigal Adato: 24:39 No idea. It’s heavy as hell.
Joe Apfelbaum: 24:40 Yes. I don’t know. You pick it up. How much does it weigh?
Yigal Adato: 24:43 40 pounds? 30 pounds?
Joe Apfelbaum: 24:45 40 pounds. Exactly. Very good. 40 pounds. Think about carrying two of those. If you’re 80 pounds overweight, think about carrying two of those. Everywhere you go. Every time you get in the car, you carry two of those in the car. Every time you get out of the car, you carry two of those out of the car. Every time you get up the stairs, you carry those up the stairs. Every time you’re sitting, you’re sitting with two of those on your lap. Thinking about the amount of energy, if you could just put those two down or put one down like you did, how much more energy would you have by just getting rid of that? That’s what I’m telling people. You have to get rid of all that to have the energy, but you also have to have the energy conducted in your body. There’s a concept called electrolytes. Most people don’t know about this. There’s a concept called electrolytes and we as Americans are deficient in a major electrolyte called potassium. Most people don’t know this, but we are potassium deficient as a nation and potassium is a very important electrolyte. You cannot have more than 4,700 milligrams a day according to the USDA or something. Look it up yourself, speak to your doctor. Anything that I tell you, by the way, speak to your doctor. I’m not a doctor [Incomprehensible] disclaimer or don’t do anything here. I’m not a professional, I’m just sharing my experience. But anyway, you need a certain amount of potassium and you need a certain amount of sodium in your body. When you drink too much water, your body actually eliminates the sodium. That’s why people get dehydrated. Sometimes they get sick from drinking too much water, so you gotta be careful how much water you drink. That’s why you only should drink half your weight in ounces. And if you’re exercising, maybe a little more, but you know the bottom line is you ever like sweat a lot and then you taste salty. What’s happening is your body is getting rid of its salts because you’re basically cleaning out your system. So you need to replenish yourself and you need to replenish your magnesium and you need to replenish your potassium. If you’re an entrepreneur and you’re not focused, you’re missing electrolytes. If you’re not focused, this is big. People think that you take ADD medication and this and that and the other thing, you need magnesium to focus. You actually need minerals. You need electrolytes to focus. And if you don’t have that, you’re not gonna be able to be focused. So I always tell people, you need to learn what electrolytes you need. And I write it in the book. I explained exactly what electrolytes you need and all that stuff.
Yigal Adato: 26:59 Got It. Love it man. Let me ask you this question. People are listening to the episode and be like, okay, you know, I might want to lose some weight and want to have more high energy. What happened to your business when you lost the 95 pounds, when you gained all the energy what happened?
Joe Apfelbaum: 27:18 What’s happening right now to my business is that I have a whole another level of profitability in my business, a whole another level of connecting with my employees, a whole another level of attracting talent, of attracting clients. Like when people meet with me, they’re like, that’s the person that I want to spend time with because I am so aware, so open, so energetic, so happy, so alive, so grateful that I get to be alive because I don’t have all this crap weighing me down physically but also emotionally. When you lose that amount of weight, whether it’s 10 pounds, 20 pounds, 30 pounds, 40 pounds, you’re actually losing emotional weight too. It weighs heavily on you and you can be present. You know, I look at people that are majorly avoid, they can’t even look at me in my eyes. They can’t look at me in my eyes because they have so much stuff, so much emotional stuff baggage that they’re carrying around within their physical bodies that it takes a toll. So now I express myself more openly when I run. I basically am so energetic and so happy and when I share I can share much more authentically. I was a public speaker back then when I was 265 pounds and I was not connecting with my audience. I had a big problem. I wasn’t connected with my audience because I wasn’t being authentic because I had all this emotional baggage and I started looking at my own body and started realizing, you know what? It’s because I didn’t have a lack of integrity with my energy level. I have a lack of integrity. So once I started losing the weight, I started learning about what foods create fat versus what foods make you lose fat. I learned the secrets of apple cider vinegar. I learned the secrets of certain ingredients, the electrolytes. I learned the secrets of movement and how to get myself to cleanse my body because clean cells are high energy cells. You need to have clean cells. So I learned about the lymph system and how the lymph system works and I wrote all about in the book and I learned about like waking up early and like going from a night owl to a morning person and realizing that the energy levels I have in the morning are much better than the ones I have at night and they get depleted towards the end of the night. Instead of going to sleep at 3:00 AM I started going to sleep early and getting up really, really early and having better energy and kind of like the whole thing. Everything I talk about it’s like, wow! and Wow! This is like next freaking level! I get so pumped about sharing this information because so many people are just dragging their feet around. I see it like if you walk around New York, you see people’s faces and you see like their heads are like all crunched up and they’re keeping so much like energy on there for you see the look at my forehead. It’s like all crunched up now. Like I might have to squeeze it with both hands because that’s how people are walking around, but instead take a deep breath. You want to know a stress killer? You want to kill stress before stress kills you. This is a stress killer. Watch this [Deep breath]
Yigal Adato: 30:12 A deep breath.
Joe Apfelbaum: 30:15 A deep breath here checking this out. Imagine you’re sitting in your car and you’re on the 405 alright. You’re on the 405 in California or the 805 in San Diego and there’s tons and tons of traffic and you’re like, you’re almost late for a meeting and you know that weighs just added 70 minutes to your commute and this is the most important meeting like your marriage relies on this, your business relies on this, everything relies on this meeting. Are you going to be stressed out?
Yigal Adato: 30:46 Yes.
Joe Apfelbaum: 30:47 Now, let’s say right in front of you, a police officer opened the door for you to an exit that you’ve never seen before and now you’re going to be there five minutes early. What are you going to do?
Yigal Adato: 30:58 You can take a deep breath like [Exhale]
Joe Apfelbaum: 31:00 You’re going to take a deep breath. You went from being stressed out to being relieved because of some circumstance happened, but physically, physically all you did was you took a deep breath. The definition of stress is not breathing. The definition of stress is not breathing. When I learned this, I quit smoking instantly because the smoking is all about breathing. I don’t know if you’ve ever smoked. I used to smoke a pack a day and when I smoke, what happens is you put your fingers on your mouth, smokers try this out. You put your fingers on your mouth and you take a deep, deep, deep, deep, deep breath, and then you swallow that breath. You hold it in and then you just exhale and you do that for five minutes. Sometimes you get lightheaded because he got so much oxygen. Nothing to do with the smoke. It has to do with the oxygen. Now you can do that without the smoke. You can breathe deeply for five minutes and get the same freegan benefit. And when I realized that I started meditating a little more, which is basically just breathing. Meditation is not about stopping to think. You can not stop the think. No one can stop The think. Meditation is by definition about breathing. You’ve got to breathe, get in tune with your physical body, get in tune with your mind, become more aware and that will relax you.

Yigal Adato: 33:13 There you go. And it’s essentially the secrets of how Joe Lost 95 pounds, got all this energy and Joe runs a very successful business. I mean he’s doing great things and it’s because of this energy. I believe that he is so connected with people and he has more clientele. One thing I say in my speeches, Joe, and I want you to kind of agree or disagree with me and I know you’re going to agree with me. So, I tell people that the healthier they get, the more safe their employees feel.
Joe Apfelbaum: 33:42 They’re healthier they get. Cause I want to add a caveat on to that. The healthier you get physically and emotionally, physically and emotionally because people is like healthy as in what? As in more profit. No, profit is nice to have, but the real profit comes when you actually start noticing your employees and by the way, notice if your employees are hydrated because if they’re not hydrated. They’re the ones, by the way, you want to get more of your employees, give them water and have them drink it. You will get more out of your employees. It’s crazy, but yes, they will feel safer because you know now my employees used to be damn scared of me as their boss. Now I’m their coach because I have more awareness and I’m healthier because now they realize like, oh my God, we can rely on Joe. He’s not going to come-in in a bad mood and just yell at us and fire us all. Now he’s able to maintain his energy levels. He doesn’t get hangry. By the way, once you get rid of these five ingredients from your diet, you never get hangry. You get passionate, but you don’t get hangry.
